Misogi is an ancient Japanese ritual purification performed in water or nature to cleanse body and mind. Deeply connected to Hakusan faith, it is considered an important ceremony before approaching the sacred mountain. It offers visitors a chance for mental reset and introspection.
The Shishimai lion dance is a traditional performing art meant to ward off evil and pray for a bountiful harvest. It is especially well preserved and actively performed around the Hakusan area. Each district has distinct masks and dance styles, reflecting local pride and history.
Tour a workshop where the “lion masks,” long used as talismans against evil and misfortune, are crafted. Guests paint their own miniature lion mask (netsuke), creating an original keepsake.
Located at the foot of Mount Hakusan, the Shiramine district preserves traditional houses adapted to heavy snowfall and a rich cultural heritage. Once prosperous through sericulture, the area contains many historically valuable buildings and is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
