3Days / 2Nights
Formal ritual visit at Shirayama-Hime Shrine, the spiritual gateway to Mt. Hakusan
Your journey begins with a visit to Shirayamahime Shrine, the head shrine of over 3,000 Hakusan shrines across Japan. Here, you’ll delve into the origins of the Hakusan faith, which has endured for over 1,300 years as one of Japan’s most revered mountain worship traditions.
Experience the living culture shaped by the blessings of Hakusan’s natural bounty—witness a captivating shishi-mai (lion dance) passed down through generations, and take part in hands-on local craft workshops that reflect the region’s deep connection to nature.
Later, explore Shiramine, a picturesque village at the foot of the mountain, designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. This timeless townscape offers a serene window into traditional mountain life.
On Day 2, you’ll begin the highlight of your journey: the ascent of Mount Hakusan. Accompanied by an expert mountain guide, you’ll trek through pristine alpine landscapes toward the summit, where the breathtaking sunrise above the clouds awaits.
This sacred site offers a rare opportunity to directly connect with the heart of Hakusan faith—a moment of spiritual clarity and awe that transcends the physical journey.
PLAN
DAY 1
Misogi is a traditional Japanese practice of ritual purification, performed in nature—often with water—to cleanse both body and mind. Deeply rooted in the Hakusan faith, it is considered a vital spiritual preparation before entering sacred mountains. This immersive experience offers visitors a chance to reset mentally and reflect inwardly.
The Shishimai (lion dance) is a traditional performance meant to ward off evil spirits and pray for a rich harvest. In the Hakusan region, it has been passed down for generations and remains a vibrant expression of local identity. Each community has its own masks, movements, and rhythms—making every performance unique and deeply cultural.
Visit an artisan workshop where the iconic Kaga Shishi-gashira lion masks—symbols of protection and good fortune—have been handcrafted for centuries. After observing the craftsmanship up close, guests will paint their own miniature lion mask (netsuke) to create a one-of-a-kind keepsake imbued with tradition.
Nestled at the base of Mount Hakusan, the village of Shiramine is known for its traditional architecture adapted to heavy snowfalls and its well-preserved cultural heritage. Once a flourishing center of silk production, the village is now designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Here, guests can experience the rhythms of mountain life and timeless Japanese hospitality.
DAY 2
Mount Hakusan (2,702 meters), straddling the borders of Ishikawa, Gifu, and Fukui prefectures, is one of Japan’s Three Sacred Mountains—alongside Mount Fuji and Mount Tate. Since ancient times, it has been revered as a mountain where gods dwell. At the summit lies the inner sanctuary of Shirayamahime Shrine, a spiritual climax to the pilgrimage.
